CIT Minority Graduate Fellowship Program
January 1995
The CIT Minority Graduate Fellowship Program provides first year support for graduate students who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents and who identify themselves as African-American, Native American or Hispanic. Funding is available to supplement existing awards (such as GEM) or to provide first year support for students who the department identifies as being competitive, but will only admit without support. Tuition is covered by GTR return from the university, college and department. Departments may apply to the program for full or partial stipend support.
Initial support is provided as an opportunity to evaluate the student's performance and to provide additional time to identify appropriate research interests. Support beyond the initial year is expected to be provided by the normal avenues of departmental/research support.
This fellowship builds upon the 1993 Provost agreement to offer full GTR for the following U.S. citizens or permanent residents:
Graduate Students of Color for those ethnic/racial minority students who are under-represented in engineering, (specified as African-American, Hispanic/Latino/Chicano and Native American).
Tuition return for Carnegie Scholars: women doctoral students in science and engineering and doctoral students of color in all disciplines are eligible for full GTR for 4 years if they are appointed as Carnegie Scholars.
Named fellowships such as GEM fall into the above categories and as such qualify the student for full GTR.
