Y4 is intended to be used as a Virtual Fabrication Line (tm) which can conceptually be used to mimic a real fabrication line as closely as possible within the limitations of modeling accuracy. One way to look at it is as a sophisticated computer game where one has to make proper decisions for this virtual factory to be profitable in a real market situation.

A partial list of what Y4 should be able to:

  • emulate operations of a multi-product fabrication line taking into account equipment, operators, material, energy usage, etc.
  • emulate timing of various processes and events like design time, test time, failure analysis time, etc., at any level of granularity.
  • simulate attributes of product, fabrication, test, packaging, failure analysis and their evolution with time.
  • calculate cost based on arbitrary models of calculations.
  • incorporate any user defined models of calculations for any stage of manufacturing.
  • interactively observe and alter models or their parameters as one would do ina real fabrication line.
  • store and play back components of simulation already performed and create new factory models based on previously designed ones.

Yield Forecasting requires the ability to perform all of the above. And hence our initial traget in building Y4 and demonstrating its feasibility was to concentrate on modeling yield as a function time using Y4.
