HW/SW Codesign -- A Solution?
- Total functionality matters, not hardware platform nor software
       package
  - Commodity hardware used; Wintel compatibility not a big issue
  - Software used to provide product differentiation features
- Cost and performance optimization require system-level approach
  - Trade off hardware vs. software for minimum cost
  - In future, need to include even more in tradeoff scope
- Additional concerns need to be addressed
  - Partitioning to permit unknown functionality changes (without
       over-designing)



  - Life-cycle cost models
  - Business-driven ("non-technical") design tradeoffs
