Intro

Heng means "constant" or something that never stops moving forward. Heng-Tze comes from the proverb—"Do everything with persistence and passion." It is engraved in my soul and has always been my philosophy.

I'm currently a software engineer and researcher in the Large-Scale Machine Learning Team at Google Research. I love music, art, computer science, and machine learning. Most of my research projects have been exciting combinations of these elements. My mission is to give computers the power to learn, understand, and appreciate the meanings behind the signals as humans do (or, even beyond what humans can do).

I earned my Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University in 2013. My research interests include machine learning, audio/image/multimodal signal processing, human activity recognition, indoor positioning/location recognition, context-aware mobile applications, and content-based multimedia information retrieval. Before joining Carnegie Mellon, I earned my bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from National Taiwan University in 2008. The projects I have worked on ranged from retrieving similar music based on detected chord sequences, to recognizing the locations and activities of a user based on various sensor inputs.

Outside academia, I had recently worked at Google, Qualcomm Research Center, and Motorola Mobility Research as a research and software engineering intern. My work turned into two patents on gesture recognition and human activity recognition, and a new feature selection framework for Google Ads ranking and prediction models.

Besides computer science and engineering, I’m also a musician and a traveler. I was the conductor of National Taiwan University Chorus, where I directed over a hundred people on the stage of the National Concert Hall. I was the lead vocalist of the band HumorHead, where I performed pop, jazz, and rock 'n' roll. I also play guitar and I'm a singer-songwriter. To justify the claim of being a traveler, I have traveled over 13 countries plus a 3,000-mile nonstop road trip across the North America.
