Surface acoustic wave devices can be operated as sensors for strain, temperature, chemical environment, etc. We are exploring SAW sensors both for harsh-environment applications and also for other strain sensing applications.
The figure below illustrates the excitation of a surface acoustic wave on the surface of a piezoelectric substrate.
