Synthesis & Re-synthesis
- Any customization risky
  - NRE costs
  - Turnaround time / time to market
  - Logistics 10-50 years later
  - Software as only customization is attractive (are FGPA's
       software?)
  - Standard components (HW&SW) as building blocks -- composition
       instead of synthesis
- Changes to designs may be too expensive, even if resultant
       design is cheaper:
  - Design qualification/certification
  - Life-cycle support & configuration management
  - But, when components become obsolete there may be no choice
